We Will Attend CEIPI Course on European Patent Litigation
We are happy to note that starting in October of 2022 and running through June of 2023, we will attend the CEIPI diploma program on European Patent Litigation and the new Unified Patent Court at the University of Strasbourg, for the Diploma Patent Litigation in Europe.
We believe that the Unified Patent Court (UPC) will change how US companies view litigating in Europe and how they view opposing EPO granted patents.
The UPC is a new court system. It is not German or French or Dutch. It is a fundamentally new venue for adjudicating patent disputes in the EU states. It borrows from the jurisprudence of many EU countries and from the common law procedures of the UK, a state which has, due to Brexit, removed itself from the UPC.
As we ready for the start of the new UPC forum, we will prepare with other experts as we all try to predict how the legal framework and procedures will develop. It is, of course, our intent to attend the proper classes and training, secure certificates and diplomas and take the responsible route to becoming capable and ready for proceedings in this forum. We believe that investing in this effort will benefit our clients.
This class at the University of Strasbourg is organized by CEIPI and is a professional training program for patent professionals and it offers an immersion in the systemic aspects and the most recent practices in patent litigation, with a focus now on the UPC.
We look forward to this program and reporting on what we learn from this class and from discussions with experts and colleagues.
Although no firm date is set, it is expected that the UPC will open its doors and take its first ever case sometime in the first half of 2023.
